The differences at a glance

Seven differences change a choice: the pier, the boat, the length, the sailings, the ticket, the price and the commentary. Sightseeing cruises and dinner cruises are different products, so each gets its own table, and a sightseeing price is never set beside a dinner price. Every cell says where it comes from, and a cell reads "Not published" when no page this guide could read states it.

The Viator listing notes that on July 14 the Bateaux Parisiens last departure is 5:00 PM; this guide could not confirm it on an operator page. The tourist office names pontoon 5 as Bourdonnais and pontoon 7 as Debilly. Its Bateaux Parisiens access text says toilets on board are by staircase only, yet that the Jean Marais has adapted sanitary facilities; accessible toilets are on the pontoons.

Where each one leaves from

The Bateaux-Mouches pier is at the Pont de l'Alma. The Bateaux Parisiens pier is at the Port de la Bourdonnais, at the foot of the Eiffel Tower. Bateaux Parisiens has also run cruises from the foot of Notre-Dame, but no current schedule for that start appeared on any source this guide read, and none of its seven Viator listings departs from Notre-Dame, so only two starts are compared here.

Tickets and boarding rules

Bateaux-Mouches sells a sightseeing ticket without a time slot. It says the ticket is open for any departure that day and does not hold a seat. Viator describes the Bateaux Parisiens ticket as booked for a date with no time slot, shown at the quay. What each operator publishes about boarding, refunds and access differs, and the table shows it row by row.

What each route shows

Both name the Eiffel Tower, the Louvre, Notre-Dame, the Conciergerie and Invalides. Each operator lists some sights the other's pages do not mention. That reflects what the pages say and does not prove what the boats pass. Bateaux-Mouches publishes the order of its route. No Bateaux Parisiens route order appeared on a source this guide could read, so only one route can be drawn.

When each one sails

Pick a date to see the sailings each source publishes and sunset for that day. Bateaux-Mouches publishes a timetable rule. For Bateaux Parisiens the tourist office gives a first departure and an interval but no last departure, and Viator lists no start times for the regular sightseeing cruise.

Sunset moves by up to about two minutes a day, least near the solstices.

Features come from the operator, the tourist office or the Viator listing and were not checked on board. Traveler opinions about seats or crowds are not used on this page, because no source read gives them as a measured fact.

Which one for your trip

Each line names the difference that decides that situation and the row above that holds it. None of them ends in a winner, because the situations pull in different directions.

  1. You are staying near the Eiffel Tower

    Decided by the pier row

The Bateaux Parisiens pier is less than 0.5 km from the Tower in a straight line, and the Bateaux-Mouches pier is about 1.0 km away. These are straight-line distances, not walking times, which no source read publishes.

  2. You are staying near the Champs-Élysées

    Decided by the pier row

From the Arc de Triomphe the Bateaux-Mouches pier is about 1.0 km away in a straight line and the Bateaux Parisiens pier is about 1.5 km away.

  3. You are staying near the Louvre or Notre-Dame

    Decided by the pier row

Both piers are across town. From the Louvre it is about 2.5 km to the Bateaux-Mouches pier and about 3.0 km to the Bateaux Parisiens pier. From Notre-Dame it is about 3.5 km and about 4.0 km. A third operator, Vedettes du Pont Neuf, boards less than 0.5 km from the Louvre, and the overview lists it.

  4. You want to sail at dusk or after dark

    Decided by the sailings row

Bateaux-Mouches publishes a rule with a last regular sailing at 21:30. The tourist office listing gives Bateaux Parisiens a first departure and an interval but no last departure, so check the operator's own timetable for your day before you plan around a late boat.

  5. You want a meal on board

Decided by the dinner table row

Both list a dinner cruise at 20:30 every day and an earlier one. Bateaux-Mouches states a smart-dress rule, a booked table and a 72-hour cancellation window. Those rules are not published for Bateaux Parisiens on a page this guide could read.

  6. Someone needs step-free access

Decided by the step-free access row

The tourist office listings describe a ramp for both. For Bateaux Parisiens they give a limit of 4 wheelchairs per boat and toilets on board by staircase only, and say the boat Jean Marais has adapted sanitary facilities. For Bateaux-Mouches they list no adapted toilets on the boats. Ask the operator about your party before you book, because the tourist office is not the operator.

  7. You want commentary in a particular language

    Decided by the commentary row

The tourist office names 10 Bateaux-Mouches commentary languages: German, English, Mandarin Chinese, Korean, Spanish, French, Italian, Japanese, Portuguese and Russian. For Bateaux Parisiens it gives audio guides in 14 languages and a guide adding commentary in 4, without naming them, so ask the operator about yours. Both come from the tourist office and neither is the operator's own statement.

What each costs, like for like

Prices are shown in separate operator blocks because the readable sources do not establish that the two sightseeing tickets have the same terms. Bateaux-Mouches prices are read from its own pages. Bateaux Parisiens prices come from the tourist office, which does not date them, and the Viator extract carries no prices. Where no price appeared on a page this guide could read, the page says so.

One-hour sightseeing cruise

The operator describes this as an open ticket valid one year.
These are undated examples from the tourist office listing. This guide could not confirm the ticket terms on an operator page, so this block is not a like-for-like comparison with the Bateaux-Mouches ticket.

Menus are different products, so the rows are not a ranking. The menu list on the information page is the primary price. The operator's dinner-page FAQ states a wider range, €135 to €480 for the 20:30 cruise (the only €480 item is the New Year's Eve dinner), so confirm the price on the official site for your date. Special evenings (New Year, Valentine's Day, Bastille Day, Mother's Day, Christmas lunch) have their own rates.

No Bateaux Parisiens dinner price appeared on a page this guide could read. The Viator extract contains no prices, so no value is shown here.

Where to book

The two operators sell different tickets, so each row opens that operator's own page.

Questions about the two operators

Which is better, Bateaux-Mouches or Bateaux Parisiens?

Neither wins for everyone. The scenario list shows which difference decides which trip, and the overview of Seine cruises lists the other operators.

Why are they called bateau-mouches?

"Bateaux Mouches" is the registered name of one Paris company and is also used for sightseeing boats on the Seine in general. An encyclopedia entry traces the word to the Mouche area of Lyon, where the first boats were built. The Bateaux-Mouches page says more.

Where do I go if neither operator fits my plan?

That depends on who is going, when and where you stay. Choose by your plan covers every operator and format.

Are Bateaux Parisiens good?

This guide does not rate operators. It compares what sources state: the pier, the boat as described, the commentary languages and the access details in the tables above. Traveler reviews are opinions and are not used here as facts.

How do the prices compare?

The price section keeps the operators in separate blocks because the readable sources do not establish that their ticket terms match. Each figure names its source, and an unknown value stays unknown.

How strict is the dress code on the dinner cruise?

Bateaux-Mouches requires smart dress in the evening and says it will not allow sportswear, flip-flops, Bermuda shorts or baseball caps on board. Its terms of sale also list sandals, shorts and tank tops for dinner cruises, so dress smartly and ask the operator if you are unsure. No dress code for the Bateaux Parisiens dinner cruise appeared on a source this guide could read, so ask the operator before you go.

Mouches, Parisiens or an aperitif cruise?

An aperitif cruise is a different product from either operator's sightseeing or dinner cruise. Other operators sell them, and the overview lists the ones this guide read.
