Which Musée d'Orsay entrance to use

The entrance depends on the ticket. During the renovation, visitors with a timed ticket use the Quay entrance (entrance 1). Visitors with a ticket without a time stamp, visitors without a ticket, priority visitors, groups with a reservation, visitors with reduced mobility and visitors with luggage use the Forecourt entrance (entrance 2). The museum asks visitors to arrive at least 15 minutes before their time slot.

The visit page lists these priority visitors: pregnant women, people with disabilities who hold a disability card or a priority card (with a companion), Carte Blanche holders, members of the Society of Friends of the Musée d'Orsay and Musée de l'Orangerie, and members of the American Friends. A Paris Museum Pass holder reserves the timed ticket on the Paris Museum Pass website.

What the Musée d'Orsay holds

The Paris tourist office describes the permanent collections as the art of the Western world, painting, sculpture, decorative arts, graphic arts, architecture and photography, from 1848 to 1914. The article counts 6,000 works, of which about 3,000 are on show at any time.

The museum's collections page lists the collections by technique: paintings, sculptures and medals, decorative arts, photography, graphic arts and pastels, and architecture, and it offers a search of the collections. The visit page places an Impressionists gallery on the 5th floor, with the Café Campana at its exit.

The Musée d'Orsay says its paintings collection comes from earlier museums: the Musée du Luxembourg, created in 1818 for works by living French artists, the Jeu de Paume, and the Louvre, which exhibited major 19th-century artists and added Impressionist rooms in 1929.

We do not rank works. For a particular artist, search the museum's own collections page.

How long to plan for a Musée d'Orsay visit

The pages we read give no length for a visit. The planner shows the time the museum's hours leave you from your arrival, and what the museum asks visitors to allow.

Figure: the time the hours leave between your arrival and the galleries closing. It says nothing about how long a visit takes.

Taking off the 15 minutes before a time slot that the museum asks visitors to allow, that leaves about 7 h until the galleries close.

Musée d'Orsay renovation: what changes for visitors

From March 10, 2026 through summer 2028 the Musée d'Orsay undertakes renovation work of its public areas. The museum stays open for the whole period, all collections and exhibitions remain accessible without change, access routes are modified during the works, and online booking is highly recommended. The museum's renovation article advises visitors to consult it to prepare their visit, and the museum's home page asks them to check the access conditions.

Buying Musée d'Orsay tickets from the right place

The museum sells tickets on its official ticketing website, billetterie.musee-orsay.fr, and its home page warns that fake booking websites exist. The Musée d'Orsay tickets page covers what a ticket costs, who enters free, how the time slot works and how to spot look-alike sites.

Musée d'Orsay or the Louvre: which fits your day

The two museums close on different days, the Musée d'Orsay on Monday and the Louvre on Tuesday. The Louvre vs Musée d'Orsay page sets the open days, free days, ticket rules and scenarios side by side.
